Camera Critters

I started some Cassia alata seeds this year, and after putting them in the garden they have been a favored chow for caterpillars. The plants are still budding, and if they don't bloom it won't be the fault of the caterpillars, but mine for getting them started too late.

A Virginia Tiger Moth caterpillar?

Not what you want to see if you're a pollinator, but beautiful nonetheless.

Green Lynx Spider

Monarchs are coming through on their way south.

  2. I think you are correct on the Virgin Tiger Moth caterpillar. Sure would like to know the others. Fabulous close ups. Those monarchs have been so fun to photograph lately. They just seem to sit and rest in the garden. I've never seen so many. You got some great shots.

  6. I googled the Green Lynx Spider. So it's partial to moths right?

Now I maybe at or near the top of the food chain, but spiders freak me out a bit. Beautiful colour all the same and a nice shot!

  11. Sweetbay,

Killer Monarch shots! We have been getting several Monarchs a day here for weeks. Your green cat is likely one of the sulphur butterflies, what was it eating?

  12. Hi Sweet Bay,
Your caterpillars are cute, and I love the spider! I am missing the monarchs who used to live in my garden. I am glad you are getting to host some now.

This is early for our first snow. I hope we have some nice days yet. It seems like winter weather is coming earlier and staying later than it used to.

  14. Thank you for your comments everyone!

Rob I think Lynx Spiders will eat anything they can catch. :) I too have read that they eat a lot of months, as well as bees and wasps.

Randy, you're right, those must be Sulfur Butterfly cats. They're feeding on Cassia alata, and we've had clouds of Sulfurs the last few months.

  25. Oh Sweet Bay, how lucky you are to be on the flight path of the monarchs! Your shots of them are great and the pictures look wonderful on the blog too, hooray! Those catts are pretty, we have the fuzzy ones too, and I learned the hard way not to touch those hairs, they are stingers! Loved your gold and purple too, like royalty! :-)

  26. What great pictures! The Monarchs are just so pretty. I wish they came this far west. The green spider is very neat looking too, I don't think I've seen a green spider before.

  29. I just love your photos...the monarchs are still active. That's nice to know, as I never saw a single one this whole year. I even planted things to attract them, and planted dill, fennel, etc., which the cats like to eat. What an interesting green spider. He does look 'pretty' but understandably not the best friend to our friendly insects!

  30. I can almost feel the fuzziness of the Virginia Tiger Moth caterpillar. Amazing photo. I like thinking that maybe some of the monarchs that were in my yard earlier are now fluttering around in your garden.

  31. ooh! Love the caterpillars, fuzzy and smooth, and the wonderful butterflies. Did you get a new camera, or is it just that the margins are wider? :)

  32. Fantastic close-ups, Sweet Bay! The caterpillars are really interesting and different from what I have seen here all summer. But my favorite has to be the Monarchs, of course. They have been gone from my garden for a week or two, so I'm glad to see they are making their way safely to warmer climes.

  34. Hello sweetbay; the little critters in their colourful tenure are absolutely beautiful and also must haves in my garden. I accept that they munch their way through certain plants. It is such a lovely sight when the butterflies dance.
    Gorgeous pictures.
