This is Prince, who is my horse out of my Thoroughbred mare by a Hanoverian stallion.
He's sucking on his tongue in the second picture, which is a little hard to see, so here is a picture from last spring. Orphans often suck on their tongues because they didn't get to nurse as much as they wanted as foals and they're so happy when they do get the milk that they never get out of the habit of sucking when happy. Prince will suck after a meal or a snack (peppermints are his favorite) and when he's happy to see his mom or dad. Foals with their mothers will nurse as often as every 20 minutes, while orphans are often on a 2-3 hour schedule around the clock.

Suck away, sweet Prince! Reminds me of cats who continure to knead their paws on anything soft, like my stomach!, to soothe themselves and remember the good old days with their own mamas. :-)

Awwww, what a sweetie. A couple of my dogs will suckle in their sleep and I wonder if they were weaned too early.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty! He's obviously not camera shy:)
ReplyDeletePrince is quite handsome, handsome enough to tongue suck if he wants too. Besides it sounds like he has good reason.

Prince is a beautiful boy. I don't think I've seen a horse suck his tongue - or if I have, I didn't realize what he was doing. Is Prince an orphan, or does he just have a bit of an oral fixation?
ReplyDeleteHe is so beautiful. I never knew a horse would suck on peppermints.
ReplyDeleteJanie Prince is an orphan with an oral fixation. lol *Everything* goes into his mouth. You have to watch him.
ReplyDeleteCatherine he crunches the peppermints and then sucks on his tongue. :)
I think I'm in love!
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Showed the pics to my little guy, who is on a horse kick right. He kept saying, "Hosey! Gallop! Gallop!"
ReplyDeleteBeautiful horse..I got a chuckle out of the pictures, as my husband is always doing the same way with his tongue especially when he's trying to concentrate or do a specific project..I tell him one of these days he's going to bite down too hard and bite it off! LOL!
ReplyDeletePrince is so handsome! I have a friend who loves horses and has 3 of her own. They love peppermint too, which always amazes me... I would never think of peppermint as a horse treat but I guess it's pretty common.
ReplyDeletePrince is such a good-looking horse! Loved all the information about orphans and foals...great photos too! Loved the second one most!!
ReplyDeleteToo too cute! Love the last portrait! I love getting up close to horses and looking into their eyes..well it's like seeing their soul!I'm sure you would agree.
ReplyDeleteHe's a handsome fellow. Did you raise him?
ReplyDeleteMarnie
Your Prince is very handsome!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. :)
ReplyDeleteRosey, Prince is not named for the singer Prince. :) His mother's name was Adversary Miss and his father's name is Prince Optimus, so we named him Adversary Prince.
Jackie I still think it's funny that horses love peppermints so much too.
Naturegirl, yes, horses have such big expressive eyes, it is like looking right into their souls! Did you spot some mischief in Prince's? :)
Marnie yes we raised him. He was born here on our farm.
I learned something new. Now how do I stop :)
ReplyDeleteWiseAcre if you're into horses, it's like anything else, you never stop learning.
ReplyDeleteAwww, Prince is such a handsome fellow. I never knew that about sucking on their tongue. Makes sense tho. My daughter wants a horse so bad. Wish I had space for one but for now, we take her to ride once a week at an equestrian center.
ReplyDeletePrince is so handsome. I had no idea about the tongue thing... interesting! :)
