Pineapple Sage

The pineapple sage was blackened by frost about a week ago, but as we have long
warm falls here in central NC, it had a good long time to bloom. It's my favorite
of the tender salvias; the foliage, both velvety and sandpapery, has a delicious
fragrance of pineapple when brushed against, and the red flowers are beautiful.

Pineapple sage with Muhlenbergia filipes, Chrysanthemum 'Venus', and cosmos.

Also with aromatic aster

  1. It makes an excellent accent color. I've admired it on other people's blogs but never seen it for sale in my area (zone 4-5) I'm wondering if our growing season isn't long enough.

  3. Marnie you're welcome. :)

I first grew Pineapple Sage when we lived for a few years in Pennsylvania, but that's just zone 6. PS may not bloom in an area with a shorter growing season than that.

  4. I've grown pineapple sage as an annual in containers, and this year, mine bloomed late. Looking at yours makes me want to try growing it in the ground. I like your combinations.
