Late summer/ early fall is the time for skippers

and American Ladies, flexing their beautiful wings.

Lots of purple and sunshine yellow, a mecca for nectaring insects.

  9. Beautiful photos, Sweet Bay! I do appreciate the skippers and the sulphurs this fall, because they're about the only butterflies we have this year. Most of us in the Midwest have been lamenting the scarcity of butterflies this year; I'm hoping it's just a strange year and that they'll be back in larger numbers next year.

Enjoyed your blooms from Friday, too--I've never heard of Bidens before. They look like a coreopsis; are they a wildflower native to your area?

  13. My favorite photo is the one of the triplets hanging out together on the purple bloom. Butterfly bush? Your butterflies always look like they're going to flutter right out of the computer.

  14. Driving home from North Carolina today all I could think about was all those pretty yellow flowers on the roadsides and how I'd seen the same on your blog. The skippers are wonderful-stocking up for winter perhaps.

  16. Love all the critters abuzz in your garden. The skippers almost look like they are part of the flowers themselves.

  17. I made the same mistake and Randy from 'Randy And Megs Garden Paradise' gave me the proper ID of our 'Painted Ladies'.

American Lady from his butterfly website:

  18. Thank you for your comments everyone!

Rose yes, Bidens are a native wildflower here, and grows in great numbers in ditches and wet meadows.

Donna, yes, that's a Butterfly Bush, Potter's Purple.

Thanks wiseacre. I seem destined to make the same mistake over and over, maybe because Painted Ladies sounds a little bit more poetic. :)

I too will miss the butterflies this winter. Your Silver Spots are really enjoying your Butterfly Bush. The photographs with the Tiger Swallowtail are lovely too.
    Painted Ladies ARE pretty.
The wild violets are once again blooming in the yard and the last of the Eastern Tail Blues are enjoying them.
Happy October, season of the ancients.
