The three-year-old beds east of the house have matured and are full of color this year. The beautiful white iris (wish you could smell the fragrance) is a passalong from DH's grandmother. The pale blue-violet iris is I. pallida and the little white rose in back of the iris is 'Marie Pavie'. Beyond that the big white rose is the hybrid rugosa 'Sir Thomas Lipton'.
I have an idea of how to describe the white iris' fragrance. Believe it or not, I just discovered yesterday, after growing Hubricht's Bluestar for 10 years, that the flowers are fragrant. As I wrote in an earlier post, the flowers didn't look that wonderful before this year (I think the plant just needed a spring compost boost), not like something that should be as deliciously fragrant as it is. I always just thought I was getting the fragrance of the white iris, as it does drift around the garden. Anyway, take the fragrance of Hubricht's Bluestar, add a dash of vanilla, and you have the fragrance of the white iris.
Smooth Phlox, 'Crepuscule' on arbor, a mystery China/Gallica hybrid nicknamed Delia's Purple, and in the background a seedling of the rugosa hybrid 'Foxi Pavement'.

ReplyDeleteMarnie this white iris doesn't have the pallida (grapeade) fragrance. I used to have (sob) an intermediate that had a very intense pallida fragrance; I need to contact the lady I traded with and see if I can trade for it back.

ReplyDeleteSometimes scents are hard to pin down. Last year, I was trying to figure out what smelled so good from my neighbour's garden, when I realized it was my own Viburnum.

Your garden is looking lovely too flaunting her flowers. I never thought about the irises smelling like that. My garden has a few given to me over the years. I like them, but their scent is dinstinctive. I grew 'Hansa' for years and loved it for scent and beauty. BTW, thanks for your comment on my peonies. Most of mine cost around $5.00. Almost every variety is popular at the box stores here.
