The Big Bed, or Ode to Joy

This is the trellis at the south end of the big perennial bed on April 23rd, when 'Cl. Old Blush' was the main star of the show and the iris and baptisia were just tuning up.

Then 'Hansa' joined in

and by midweek the entire symphony was playing.

'Foxi Pavement' has never looked better. And the fragrance!

Not as many iris are blooming as I had hoped, but I have been pushing them with compost and water the last 2-3 weeks. Now I am seeing more buds, so perhaps the persuasion worked. I think most are going to be the old faithfuls, Eva's White and Jesse's Song.

Hubricht's Blue Star has never looked this good before in bloom. Usually I impatiently wait for its flowers to be gone, they were so insignificant compared to the billowing graceful foliage, but this year the flowers are beautiful.

I have been working like a gardening demon in this bed dividing, underplanting, weeding, composting, watering, seeding... one day perhaps my ultimate vision for this bed will come to fruition, but currently there are things that shine and make up for the gaps. They fill me with joy.

  1. Once again I'm uplifted by visiting your gardens. I saved one picture for my desktop, which ever changes from pictures of your gardens.

Hansa is gorgeous and I just love Foxi Pavement. The color is heavenly and they are extremely fragrant, which is a must for me.

Hubrect's Amsonia is a real sweet bloomer.

I look forward to seeing more baptistas and iris blooming in your gardens.

Your gardens are 'always' a delight.

Have a wonderful weekend in your bit of paradise.

  5. Your amsonia is a delight. I know they take a long time to get started, maybe yours will be this full and lush each season from now on (how old is it?) I hope so, that's a perennial to rival any flowering shrub!

  9. It looks great. I think the baptisia are wonderful planted with roses. I am intent on growing amsonia but so far, no luck. I think I probably need more sun. I just planted another one last year and I'm anxious to see how it does this time.

  21. Sweetbay,

Its been a busy week! I plan on getting out your irises by mid week, unless the rain gives me a break (yeah right).

Your Foxi Pavement is stunning! Those beds are looking great. About to give up here if the ground does not get soaked soon. I spent more time watering than building the garden the way I want it.

  22. The purple and white iris look especially sweet at the base of the arbour, with the pink roses above, and the white Baptisia behind. you have so much lush greenery around too.

  23. Wow, Hubrect's Amsonia is beautiful this year. I remember your photos from last autumn.

Old Bush, isn't that a strange name for a rose? I've always wondered about the name.

We won't have roses for weeks yet but our white iris are beginning to bloom.

  24. Hi Sweetbay, can i stay for a month in your garden? It looks like it can evoke lots of dormant creativities in a person, and heal all stresses the world gives! I cannot pick a single favorite because everything is beautiful and their effect together is awesome. I am sure your efforts are now paid well. thanks.
