Friday Flowers

The house needs repainting, and I'd used a wire brush to see how easily the peeling stain would come off. Wish I'd snapped the picture first. A Hardy Ginger Lily will (or should) grow up in front of the utility panel later on.

The lovely climber 'Alchymist'

This Marsh Phlox, along with Gail's PPPP, have been bloom machines.

Japanese Roof Iris

'Aloha'

Delia's Purple in background

The fragrance of the white iris is similar not only to Hubricht's
Bluestar, but Styrax americana and the rose 'Veilchenblau'.

Iris pallida, which has the fragrance of grapes.

  1. Oh my, I love your garden. It is just absolutely smothered in flowers! Very English-cottagey. I especially love the roses. Oh, and the foxgloves. And the irises. Too many to mention all. Wonderful place!

  2. Good morning. All my iris smell like grapes, or to me they seem to:)

Love those tall foxgloves. Mine never reach more than 3 feet.

  3. The white iris definitely smells different from pallida. The Fragrant Path by Louise Beebe Wilder has a wonderful chapter on iris fragrance and the different species that contributed to the fragrances of modern iris.

  4. Your roses are so beautiful. I love Alchymist. I moved mine last year and it still needs more sun. I only had 2 blooms on it this year. :(

  11. I enjoyed seeing photos of the garden in relation to the house. You haves such a nice setting for your garden, with the fields behind and the trees next to you. Those colour mixtures are some of my favourites. I particularly like the Iris pallida. The ones with light purple blue standards and dark falls are my favourite iris colours.

  14. Seeing the rose clamering up the arbor reminds me I need to get something going over my arbors. I just moved one and the other is new.
