This spring, for the first time in 7 years, poppies bloomed in my garden. 'Mother of Pearl' Shirley poppies. Some years I forgot to order the seeds; in other years they didn't come up. They started to feel like my white whale. Had I actually ever grown poppies? If I didn't have photographic evidence I would think I had imagined them.
