Blooming Friday ~ Old-Fashioned

Define old-fashioned.

What is it exactly? Is it something simple and elegant like the species Baptisia alba, Rosa rugosa alba, and Eastern Columbine, or the yellow iris that was probably introduced in the '30s or '40s? (In the iris world any iris whose introduction was more than 30 years ago is considered an historic iris.)

Now the regal-looking white iris, likely a 1950's model, is considered old-fashioned by modern iris fanciers.

Surely the rose 'Cl. Old Blush' would have to be considered old-fashioned,
considering that it was discovered by Western horticulturalists in 1752!

When I think of something old-fashioned in the garden I think of harmonious colors, full roses, and garden scenes that evoke peace and comfort.

Happy Friday, and join Katerina at roses and stuff for more Blooming Fridays from all over the world.

  1. Lovely post - sometimes "old fashioned" is best and it would be a shame to overlook the tried and true varieties... the roses are gorgeous and white iris are just so classy in my opinion.

I think you said it best with "...garden scenes that evoke peace and comfort." Love that!

    Have a beautiful Friday~ Brenda

  11. Roses are always good for an old-fashioned atmosphere. How interesting to have a species that was discovered so long ago.

  12. Old fashioned gardens are my absolute favorite!! It's what I aspire to with my garden. I love that chaotic, rambling, I've-been-here-forever look. My baptisia already has teeny little shoots! Yay!

  13. The iris and rose combinations are delightful, and the setting you have created for your home is filled with old-fashioned charm and classic beauty. In a story book a weary soul would find peace here.

  16. SweetBay,

I'm just using googles standard spam protection. Funny the comment you left the other night had no reason to be in my spam box, yet it was. I have spam get though once or twice a month not enough to drive me crazy (ier).

  19. I always think that roses can be regarded as old fashioned. You could pose a similar question as to what is romantic and they'd be there at the top of the list.
