Snow day!

The past couple of years the only kind of "snow" we've gotten is this:

Dog fennel

As weedy as dog fennel looks in summer, when its seedheads turn white
in winter it's gorgeous. It's an accent in a world of brown and taupe.

Then Wednesday there was snow, a real snowfall, not just a trace like
we got earlier this month. We got a couple of inches at least this time.

Summer phlox looking like snow cones

Japanese beautyberries

American beautyberry

Swamp roses

Bidens stems

Wax myrtle

Wisteria

The poor pony looks a little dingy against the pure white of the snow. lol

The horses were in the paddock behind the house this afternoon because Prince started pacing the
fence wanting to come back up. Apparently he thought pawing for grass was too much effort.

  1. What beautiful photos capturing the snowfall in your area. It looks peaceful and magical. I always love seeing the blue and purple colors in the snow.

  2. You got a lot more snow than we did. Ours was just a thick dusting but it was pretty. Our second snow this winter, which is beautiful but I'm over the freezing weather and ready to get back to our normal winter temperatures.

  4. I do love snow, but ... for a short period of time, although I used to live in the Russian Far East with the snow on the ground from November to March.
You garden looks lovely under the snow dust. You stay warm!

  7. Snow is less of a novelty here. We have had quite a lot of snow here considering we are only in mid-January. There have been a couple of thaws too where everything melts. The wild swings in temperature are killer, so I expect to lose the odd things come spring.

    1. I lived in southwestern Pennsylvania for 3 years. Just zone 6b, but when we were there they had record breaking harsh winters. Snow on Halloween, a storm with over 1" of ice (parts of West Virginia were without power for a month), a low of -22 with wind chill of -45, and highs of 0 (and the only 3 days the sun was out all month). In between the cold blasts the temps frequently got about freezing, about 35. All of the freezing and thawing frequently heaved my plants right out of the ground. It sounds like the situation you're facing this winter. Very hard on the plants and there were a lot of losses.

I really enjoyed the snow when we lived up there, but the cold, ice and snow were far more restrictive than our summer heat down here. The same with our recent weather.

  8. You are getting a real winter this year. We've only had about 8 inches of snow in S. Wisconsin for the entire season so far, believe it or not. There's some discussion about the threat of a drought because of it. Hopefully, we'll get plenty of precip in the form of rain during the late winter and spring. It's been a very strange winter.
