This picture may not appear very wintery, especially to bloggers from Sweden, but the climate here in central North Carolina is relatively mild. During winter we have a mixed bag of rain, snow, clouds, and sun. One day we may be getting near-freezing rain and another day the weather is like a lovely spring day. Fragrant trees and shrubs like Yulan Magnolia, Witch Hazels, Wintersweet, Winter Honeysuckle and Japanese Flowering Apricot routinely bloom from December through March. Among the ruins of winter shines the jewel-like colors of a Blue Violet or Crocus or early Narcissus. This Crocus was an even more delightful surprise because I had forgotten that I had planted some in a sunken pot mulched with gravel, safe from voles. Any Honeybees or Hoverflies that venture out on a mild day will be happy to see it too!
Happy Friday and thank you to Katarina at roses and stuff for hosting Blooming Friday.
My crocuses haven't made an appearance yet. I can't wait! Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Carla
ReplyDeleteWhat a happy surprise, Sweet Bay! I'd be thrilled to see a crocus blooming, but it would have to be a tall one to stick up through all the snow:) Ah well, our spring will come eventually, too.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sight for sore eyes with the winter we've had in New Jersey!
ReplyDeleteIt's a treat to see the lovely crocus!
ReplyDeleteI only have the yellow ones blooming right now, can't wait to see the purple and the white ones...thanks for this preview!

I only wish the sun would appear more over here. My Crocuses had one day of it and looked beautiful - now it is gloomy and they have closed up - such a waste.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
What a beautiful surprise is your crocus! I don't have any crocus, but my daffodils are finally starting to come up. They are late this year.
ReplyDeleteSweetbay,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo! Don't you just love crocuses. I did not know voles liked them? Our cat gets a lot of mice and voles around here.
The yellow crocus here has at least 3 dozen blooms right now in three bunches.
I am still surrounded by lots of snow and you have things blooming all year-no fair!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend,
Carolyn
The first crocus is still along ways off for me. I can hardly wait!
ReplyDeleteDear Sweetbay, Crocus are wonderful surprises on a winter day~ I keep watching for mine! gail
ReplyDeleteHi Sweetbay, tku for dropping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteI see you have crocus to, they are such a pretty little flower.
Mine are planted in the garden. Sometimes rabbits have a feast on them but so far this year they seem to be okay.
I always love to see the crocus bloom, because it's a pretty good sign that the coldest weather is over! Yours is a beauty and a nice surprise.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and wintry to me. I love those crocus. Mine are only beginning to come up. Can't wait.~~Dee
ReplyDeleteThe very top of my crocus leaves have just popped up through mulch. Happiness! I am passing on the Stylish Blogger Award to you for your wonderful blog! Hooray!
ReplyDeleteThat's a sight for sore eyes! This crocus is one of my favourites - can't wait for it to start blooming!
