Blooming Friday ~ One Tough Cookie

Prunus mume on Thursday Jan 28th when the weather was warm, sunny and beautiful.

On Jan 30th, after at least 2" of snow and sleet

The flowers look a little worse for wear, but temps down to 25 degrees won't kill them.

So spring-like

in comparison to this, just down the driveway. The apple trees will be
sleeping for at least another 6 weeks, and the crape myrtles until May.

15 degrees on Sunday night did kill most of the flowers,
but not the buds. This is the tree in the big perennial bed

and this is the tree by the mailbox.

The flowers have been long-lasting in a vase. The flowers were picked midday on Sunday and I took these pictures on Wednesday. They smell so sweet too.

Thank you to Katarina at roses and stuff for hosting Blooming Friday.

  1. Wow, how blessed are your with these beauties. Sigh! Those are wonderful photos SweetBay. The layer of snow in the fields is pretty, with apples and crepe myrtles waiting on spring.

    Enjoy your bit of paradise.

  2. Your prunus are amazingly durable! With the buds still hanging on, you'll soon have another round of flowers to bring out the honeybees.
    Beautiful photos!

  3. Sweetbay,

You really making me long for the Chickasaw Plums to bloom. I just love the scent of a huge wild patch of them with the seasons first butterflies enjoying them.

  12. What uplifting color! It's amazing the flowers didn't die that first night, and I'm glad the buds survived even colder temps. I love forcing blooms--forsythia is always the first around here. I used to cut a few branches from some shrubs at a nearby apartment complex which were always scraggly-looking and unpruned... until they trimmed them all into meatballs one year. ARG! I have two forsythia myself but had to hard prune them back a ton so I could move both to (hopefully) sunnier locations last year. Doubt that either will have yellow blooms this year.
