Blooming Friday

Most of the flowers have finished now, except the garden never really finishes for the year.

Encore azaleas 'Autumn Amethyst' on a misty morning.

With the golden seedheads of Northern River Oats. I got a start of the oats from the ones down by the creek.

As the weather turns colder the foliage will take on more of a purplish hue.

In a sheltered spot in the woods I found a Ladies' Tresses still in bloom. It's a tiny native orchid.

'Rainbow Knockout' (which reminds me of pink dogwood flowers and another rose, 'Nearly
Wild') combines wonderfully with the still-purple seedheads of Muhlenbergia filipes.

A couple of the Winter Honeysuckles have already started to bloom. They will probably continue to bloom on and off until April.

  1. That last photo is "knock your socks off" gorgeous Sweet Bay. I'm beyond jealous that you STILL have blooms to share. It was in the mid 60's here today tho, so I better not complain, right (blooms or not)?! I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.

  5. It always amazes me how tiny wild flowers survive in such rough ground. You think they would be overwhelmed. Obviously not!
I particularly like the last picture - very beautiful.
    Have a lovely weekend.

  6. Your lovely azalea has lots of buds still ... I imagine it will be so dramatic when the leaves turn more purple. The orchid is a fine... what a treat that must have been. You captured a beautiful work of art in your last photo. Stunning dew beads thanks to a busy spider. I hope you had a very happy Thanksgiving Sweetbay. Carol

  7. Love the way your garden looks even at this time of year. Those azalea are wonderful in color. Vibrant and striking. I love that last picture, it speaks to me. I read a statement recently about photographs and it's that the picture should tug at you, and that one certainly did.

  9. The fact that you have flowers even near the end of November is astounding my brain! They are still so pretty and I love the dew on the last photo of the honeysuckle. That is just perfection!

  10. SweetBay,

A lot of people would miss that Ladies' Tresses altogether. Very good find. I was impressed yesterday with 3 little Heal alls in bloom along our road, back in August they seemed pretty well done.

  11. I planted a few of those Encore azaleas, white and pink, and they've added a lot of color and texture to our yard. I've never heard of winter honeysuckle. Is it a vine? You've taken some wonderful pics, Sweet Bay.

  12. I agree with Kathleen on the Knockout - beautiful and love the little orchid. Nice to still see some color even if it is 'winterized' and not as striking as in the summer.

  13. Sweetbay, it seems we always have something in bloom, even if it's a solitary blossom. And I will add as others have: that last photo is absolutely stunning! Diana

  19. Thank you for your comments and kind words!

walk2write, Winter Honeysuckle is a shrub, a large one. Typically starts blooming in December and can continue into April. The flowers are wonderfully fragrant, with lemony tones.
