Butterflies and Joe Pye Weed

As you can see butterflies love Joe Pye Weed, especially the Tiger Swallowtails. It's not unusual to see at least 20 at a time. Aren't they lovely?

  2. Oh such lovely shots of butterflies and blooms. Is this Joe Pye weed? I would love to grow this, but am not sure it will grow in our heat and humidity. Every time I see photos of it I love it and drool.

    Enjoy your week ~ FlowerLady

  3. It may be an accident, but thank you for sharing it anyway! I've never had that many on my Joe-Pye, I do have have a lot of bumblebees though. Not even my neighbors monstrous Buddleia gets that many butterflies all at once!

  4. Yes, that's Joe Pye, one of the best butterfly plants! According to the USDA maps there are at least a couple of species that grow throughout Florida: Tall Joe Pye Weed and Sweet-Scented Joe Pye Weed.

  7. Wow look at all of those butterflies. They sure like your Joe Pye. I just planted a variegated Joe Pye and I well love seeing it attract the butterflies like yours does in the years to come. Have a wonderful week.

  10. Oh my gosh, these are beautiful! I'm amazed at all the swallowtails; I'm lucky to see one at a time, and even that happens infrequently. I'm going to have to talk to my Joe--he just isn't doing his job:)

  12. LOL:) I can't respond on the reply. It's probably you didn't do that.....but I remember seeing this with several kinds of butterflies over my years of here and there.....and everytime I saw masses of them, I was in awe. Whether it was the Monarchs of Santa Cruz on the Eucs, or the Sulphurs puddling along the shores of the Amazon......it takes your breath away. Love these shots.

  17. WOW!!!! What a testament to Joe Pye!!! I'd be delighted and terrified if I saw that many Swallowtails on my Joe Pye ~ terrified only because my blooms are always loaded with ambush bugs & I'd be afraid they'd get every butterfly. Fabulous photos SB.

    1. Currently most of the assassin bugs are feasting on the unfinished tomatoes. They must find them to be easier prey. lol

The Swallowtails have now moved on to the Buddleia. Swallowtails all over each one!
